We hope that you will take
as much pleasure in browsing our ever-growing selection as we have had
creating and maintaining it. Micro and craft breweries have
taken the country by storm, and we at Calvert have been supporting this
movement since day one. Come for the Budweiser, leave with
the Chimay!

If you receive Calvert's
weekly E-Mail
Newsletter then you're probably familiar with the section "Brews News".
This is the part of the newsletter in which Gordon and I
(Chris)
review new beers, and accompany tasting notes along with our thoughts.
So I thought that it would be a great idea to post a
collection
of our reviews on this site. I will updating the reviews
weekly,
as we continue to taste many of the new and exciting beers that we
receive!

2008 is going to be
another stellar year for beer! With the growth in popularity,
more and
more Micro-brews from around the nation are making their way to
Maryland. The only trouble that we (beer lovers) are facing
is the
steadily increasing price of our favorite brews. The cost of
hops is
sky-rocketing because farmers are choosing to grow more profitable bulk
crops such as corn and wheat. Transportation costs are
increasing
because of the price of fuel and import taxes. These
variables
culminate into one sad, simple fact that we all must face.
The price
of good beer is going up! Well... All I know is
that I won't be
trading down to something less enjoyable to save a buck.
Premium beer
is worth the premium price!

Calvert had a great 2009, and I can't
speak for everyone, but the economy certainly didn't fail us.
There were some exciting developments in the beer world, as well
as some disappointments, but we must stay positive! DuClaw and
Pub Dog, two locals, both started bottling their respective beers last
year, and the response has been huge so far! Pub Dog is planning a line
of Belgian styles for '10, and DuClaw has only released "Devil's Milk"
barleywine but I hear they soon plan to bottle their 21%ABV monster
"Colossus". Exciting stuff is happening in Charm City people.
One unfortunate occurance is Lagunitas pulling their Frank Zappa
line from production. Due to his wife having ultimate control
over his name and likeness, she felt as though the late rockstar
shouldn't be appearing across the country on 22 ounce beer bottles,
even if it they were just kind homages. Oh well... Back in
November, myself and colleague Jennifer flew out to Sonoma County to
shack uo in wine country for a week. I made a point to take the
time and visit one my favorite West Coast breweries, Bear Republic.
Hell of a time! I only wish we could sell half the beers
that they have on draft, such as the "Black Raven Porter", man I
wish that were available in Maryland. Russian River Brewing Co.,
a brand not accessible in this market but well known nonetheless, was
our next stop. I skipped the IPAs, went straight to Belgians, and
I must say, "Bravo!" . And I gotta say, the food was almost worth
the trip there alone! If you're ever in Santa Rosa and want some
damn tasty pizza or just some good munchies, check out the RRB Brewpub,
and grab a glass of Damnation while you're at it. So until next
time, "Slainte!"
